The Astro Clock is part of my three piece Frank Lloyd Wright inspired wall clock series, along with the Sunset Clock and Peacock Clock.
This one feels the most like Taliesin West to me. It is angular, layered, a little strange, and full of different planes and materials that change as you move around it.
The background is built from walnut and cherry, with solid maple elements running vertically through the piece. Some are straight architectural lines and others taper into long teardrop shapes. Brass rods extend outward from the center and give the clock an almost atomic quality, while the different depths make the entire piece feel more like a small piece of architecture than a flat wall clock.
The clock face is the focal point. I use highly figured wood with a deep turquoise finish, surrounded by yellow and red hour markers that give it a little of that optimistic googie energy. Custom pearl hands and additional brass and acrylic details add another layer of contrast.
There is a lot happening here, but that is intentional. I wanted the Astro Clock to feel architectural, abstract and slightly bizarre in the best possible way. Something you notice from across the room and then keep finding new details in when you get closer.
I like making art that serves the purpose of telling time. The Astro Clock is a functional object, but it is really designed to live on the wall as a piece of sculptural art.
Each one is individually built by me in Los Angeles from real hardwood, brass and hand shaped materials, then finished in lacquer.
