I think we should have beautiful clocks on our walls again.
We spend enough time looking at our phones. There is something different about looking across a room and seeing the time on an analog clock, especially one that was made to be as much a piece of art as it is a functional object.
This 24 inch starburst clock is my take on the great wall clocks of the atomic and mid century modern era, a time when even ordinary household objects were designed with style and personality.
I build the clock individually in my Los Angeles workshop from solid hardwood. The body is mahogany with maple and walnut inlays, surrounded by sculpted walnut and cherry starbursts. Custom pearloid hands finish the face and give it just enough of that classic atomic era character.
There are no molded plastic decorative parts here. The shapes you see are pieces of real hardwood that I cut, shape, sand, assemble and finish in lacquer. The natural differences in the grain and color are part of what makes each clock its own.
At 24 inches across, this is a substantial wall clock. It commands attention without overwhelming the room and works beautifully as a focal point above a credenza, fireplace, record console or anywhere you would normally hang a piece of art.
I think of my clocks as functional art, but there is something particularly satisfying about a wall clock. The hands are always moving. The light changes across the wood throughout the day. It becomes part of the rhythm of the room.
In an era filled with screens and mass produced objects, I'm on a bit of a mission to bring beautiful wall clocks back into our spaces. Objects made from natural materials, built by human hands, and designed to be enjoyed for a very long time.
