I think we should have beautiful clocks on our walls again.
We spend enough time looking at our phones. There is something satisfying about looking across a room and seeing the time on an analog clock, especially when the clock itself is a piece of art.
The Lollipop Clock is my playful take on the great starburst clocks of the atomic and mid century modern era. At 24 inches across, it has plenty of presence on the wall, with sculpted walnut starbursts radiating from the center and solid brass rods supporting a collection of colorful wooden lollipops.
The body is made from solid mahogany with maple and walnut inlays. Each lollipop is made from highly figured maple, chosen specifically for the movement in the grain. I stain them individually in a transparent autumn color palette, allowing the figure and natural character of the maple to remain visible underneath. The brass adds another warm material and gives the whole clock that unmistakable atomic era character.
There are no molded plastic decorative parts. The starbursts are sculpted from solid walnut, the lollipops are real figured maple, and the clock is individually built, assembled and finished by me in my Los Angeles workshop.
I love the optimism of mid century design. There was a time when something as ordinary as a wall clock could be playful, sculptural and beautifully made. I'm on a bit of a mission to bring that idea back.
A clock doesn't have to be another disposable object, and checking the time doesn't always need to mean reaching for a screen. The Lollipop Clock is functional art that quietly moves throughout the day and becomes part of the room around it.
It's a little piece of the atomic era made for a modern home.
