Psychedelic Evening Tree No. 1 is the first of three pieces in my Evening Trees series. The work explores the quiet mystery of the natural world at night, with an old tree standing beneath the stars and a strange celestial form hovering above it.
The triangle is one of the simplest and strongest shapes in nature, and I liked the idea of using it here as something almost otherworldly. To me, the tree seems to be looking up at the night sky, wondering how it got here and perhaps admiring whatever made it.
The entire landscape is created from natural hardwoods, using the color, grain, and figure of the wood as my palette. The walnut sky is set against wenge, bloodwood, and Claro walnut, with contrasting exotic hardwoods forming the tree and celestial elements. No painted colors are needed. The character comes from the woods themselves.
Individually built by me in Los Angeles and finished in lacquer, Psychedelic Evening Tree No. 1 is a piece of contemporary wood inlay art rooted in nature, mid century design, and traditional American craft.
