The Sunset Clock is one of three sculptural wall clocks I designed with the architecture and decorative work of Frank Lloyd Wright in mind, along with the Astro Clock and Peacock Clock.
I wanted this piece to feel architectural before it even feels like a clock.
The asymmetrical background is built from solid walnut and rosewood, creating overlapping planes that remind me of desert architecture, long rooflines, changing elevations and the strong geometry found throughout mid century design. Maple latticework runs vertically through the composition, with brass and pearl details adding another layer of structure.
At the center is a highly figured maple clock face that I stain a warm tiger eye color. The figure in the maple comes alive under the finish and gives the center of the piece a warmth that feels almost illuminated against the darker woods surrounding it.
Some of my favorite details are the maple lattice elements. They have a little of the feeling of Frank Lloyd Wright's art glass windows, where simple lines, repetition and geometry become decoration without needing traditional ornament.
This is intentionally an unusual clock. It is angular, asymmetrical and a little unexpected. There are no molded decorative pieces trying to imitate wood. The composition is built from real hardwoods, individually cut, shaped, fitted and assembled by me in my Los Angeles workshop.
I like making art that serves the purpose of telling time. We can look at our phones whenever we want to know what time it is, but I would rather look across the room at something beautiful.
The Sunset Clock brings that idea to a larger scale. It is a functional piece of American craft, but it is first and foremost an object made to live on the wall as part of the architecture around it.
